Norma Marina Godfrey, the youngest of eight children, was born on the 18th November, 1934 in Upper Hutt to Margaret, a Scottish woman with the heaviest accent and the most beautiful complexion, and Walter Godfrey of the Nelson Mounted Cavalry.
She contracted Polio at the age of two and spent much of her childhood years in a splint and in and out of hospital. This did not stop her from growing into someone both beautiful and remarkable, epitomising the determination and home making skills of those kiwi women who are the heart and soul of the New Zealand way of life.
This is her story as remembered by her eldest daughter.
