Ten years in the making, this book of short stories showcases the quality of writing at international schools. The wide range of styles, genre, and voice evident serves as testimony to the remarkable variety and originality of these students.
This collection of writing comes from the pens and word processors of students from around the world. They have all been students at an American international school, situated on the consulate grounds at Dhaharan, Saudi Arabia.
The collection is entitled Best of the Best because it represents what is considered the best of the annual publication of student writing over the past ten years at DEMS (Dhahran Elementary Middle School).
The quality of the writing is an endorsement of an approach which trusts students to come up with their own topics and develop their unique style through trial and error, extensive reading, and the benefit of regular feedback from teachers and peers.
The wide range of styles, genre, and voice evident here serves as testimony to the remarkable variety and originality of international students and the reason writing teachers at international schools find it such a rewarding experience.
The first selection is from students at the Grade 5, nine to ten year old, level. The second selection is from middle school students, most of whom were twelve or thirteen years at the time of writing. Some have been chosen for their entertainment value, others because they show the hallmarks of excellence in the use of language.
For those who are teachers and are interested in the approach used in teaching writing in my classes M O Chamberlain has added a section detailing that.
Finally, for all those students out there who want to write but are finding it difficult, M O Chamberlain has included some of the secrets of professional writers.
